False pregnancy (afetal pregnancy, hysterical pregnancy or pseudocyesis) is a kind of uncommon condition with clinical and subclinical indications. The commonly used term pseudocyesis goes back to Greek words pseudes (false) and kyesis (pregnancy). It was first introduced in 1923 by John Mason Good.
False pregnancy has most symptoms of true pregnancy, though, the woman is not pregnant. False pregnancy is exceptional phenomenon and it is often psychogenic. It is suggested that false pregnancy is caused by alteration of the endocrine subsystem of the organism. This alteration causes observable physical changes similar to typical pregnancy changes.
Cases of false pregnancy have been documented since remote past. Hippocrates gave us the first arguments around 300 B.C. when he documented 12 cases of women with pseudocyesis. Queen of England Mary I, was possibly the most famous woman in history, who believed twice that she was pregnant, when she was not pregnant. Some medical historians consider that the queen's doctors took fibroid neoplasms in uterus of Queen for a true pregnancy.
PSEUDOCYESIS SYMPTOMS
It is often hard to distinguish the symptoms of afetal pregnancy from analogous symptoms of true pregnancy. Such characteristic signs as amenorrhoea (absence of menstruations), morning sickness, breasts swelling, and weight increase may all be present. Many medical professionals can be misled by the symptoms associated with false pregnancy. Surveys show that 18% of women with false pregnancy were at one time established as pregnant by gynaecologists.
The serious problem of false pregnancy is that the affected woman is convinced that she is pregnant. Abdominal swelling is the most spread physical symptom of pseudocyesis (60–90% of all afetally pregnant). The belly swells as it does during true pregnancy, so that the woman with false pregnancy looks pregnant. The swelling is often treated medically under general narcosis and the woman's belly returns to its usual size.
The second most widely-distributed physical symptom of false pregnancy is menstrual irregularity or amenorrhoea in 50–90%. In 50-70% of hysterical pregnancy patients often experience the feeling of quickening, even though there is no baby inside. Other wide-spread indications of false pregnancy include complications of gastrointestinal system, hormones abnormal secretions, breast swelling, labor pains, uterine expansion within softening of the cervix. 1% of women ultimately experience false labor.
The woman must actually believe that she is pregnant to be diagnosed as hysterically pregnant. When a woman intentionally and consciously imitates pregnancy, it is commonly known as a simulated pregnancy. Symptoms of false pregnancy can also be observed in males who have couvade syndrome (sympathetic pregnancy or phantom pregnancy).
